Creative Process Behind the “Silent Scream” Portrait |Floral and Body
There are times in our lives when we stumble upon a piece of artwork that stops us on our tracks, as if demanding our uninterrupted attention. These pieces almost always have one thing in common; they show us something in a way we haven’t seen before. When working on this floral project I felt like I was creating one of these artwork pieces I had always been in awe about. Though we started simple, the addition of flowers slowly transformed our beautiful client into a floral work of art. By the end of it I had applied flowers to the length of her hair, covering it all with florals and creating a look I hadn’t seen before. A portrayal of the layers of creativity that go into the making of each project.
While I’ve worked with warmer tones in the past, for this project I wanted to use cooler tones to go with my client’s natural blue eyes. There was an entire day of filming dedicated to the process, floral application, and of course the end results! We started with a small floral piece on the neck going towards the face using purple hues that matched the client’s makeup eyeshadow. After capturing images with the first design, I began to add florals to the client’s long brown hair which took a couple of hours for the full process. The idea came towards the end to capture what we ended up calling a “Silent Scream” portrait. This entailed a profile image that showed the length of the hair now covered in flowers, as the client parted her lips in a scream. While various other shots were captured, this particular look received plenty of attention when shared. To me it captures an action that viewers can imagine and hear when looking at the picture; and primarily, feel something. The kind of art that moves you, that is what I always hope to create.
While this design took multiple hours of work, simpler styles can be made for more social events. Hair pieces tend to be popular as they not only stand out but can also be added to multiple styled looks. As a designer, I always love to work closely with my clients to create the perfect piece to add to their planned occasion and style. If consultations are not ideal, I also have a series of pieces to choose from that can be made to last for up to 2 weeks. As everyone deserves to rock unique floral pieces at their leisure.
